Before diving into the features of KanaPro, it’s essential to understand what hiragana and katakana are and why they’re so important in Japanese.

What Are Hiragana and Katakana?

Hiragana (ひらがな) and Katakana (カタカナ) are the two phonetic alphabets used in Japanese. Unlike English letters that can have different sounds depending on the word, each kana character represents exactly one sound, making Japanese surprisingly regular in its pronunciation.

Think of kana as the building blocks of Japanese writing. Just as you need to know the English alphabet before you can read English words, you need to know hiragana and katakana before you can effectively read Japanese.

Hiragana : The Heart of Japanese Writing
Hiragana is characterized by its flowing, curved strokes and is used for:
  • Native Japanese words (like あめ – rain, てがみ – letter)
  • Grammatical particles (like は, が, を)
  • Verb endings and grammatical changes
  • Words where kanji might be too complex or formal
Katakana : The Script for Foreign Words
Katakana features more angular, straight strokes and is primarily used for:
  • Foreign loanwords (like コンピューター – computer)
  • Foreign names (like スミス – Smith, アメリカ – America)
  • Onomatopoeia (sound effects like ドキドキ – heartbeat)
  • Scientific terms and technical vocabulary
  • Emphasis (similar to using italics in English)

The Systematic Structure of Kana

Both hiragana and katakana follow the same systematic organization based on the traditional Japanese syllabary called the gojūon. This system organizes sounds into:

Rows
Groups of sounds that share the same consonant:

a-row: あ, い, う, え, お

Ka-row: か, き, く, け, こ

Sa-row: さ, し, す, せ, そ

And so on…

Columns
Groups of sounds that share the same vowel:

a-column: あ, か, さ, た, な, は, ま, や, ら, わ

i-column: い, き, し, ち, に, ひ, み, り

And so on…

This systematic organization makes learning much more logical and predictable than it might initially appear.

Complete Kana Reference Tables

Dakuon characters are created by adding two small marks called dakuten() to certain basic kana. This mark indicates that the consonant sound becomes voiced.

Hiragana Dakuon
が ぎ ぐ げ ご (ga gi gu ge go)
ざ じ ず ぜ ぞ (za ji zu ze zo)
だ ぢ づ で ど (da ji zu de do)
ば び ぶ べ ぼ (ba bi bu be bo)
Katakana Dakuon
ガ ギ グ ゲ ゴ (ga gi gu ge go)
ザ ジ ズ ゼ ゾ (za ji zu ze zo)
ダ ヂ ヅ デ ド (da ji zu de do)
バ ビ ブ ベ ボ (ba bi bu be bo)

Handakuon characters are created by adding a small circle called handakuten() to the ha-row characters, changing the ‘h’ sound to ‘p’. Only 5 characters each in hiragana and katakana.

Hiragana Handakuon
ぱ ぴ ぷ ぺ ぽ
(pa pi pu pe po)
Katakana Handakuon
パ ピ プ ペ ポ
(pa pi pu pe po)

Common examples: パン (pan – bread), ピアノ (piano), プール (puuru – pool), ペン (pen), ポスト (posuto – post)

Yōon are created by combining certain kana with small versions of や (ya), ゆ (yu), or よ (yo). These create sounds like “kya,” “shu,” “cho,” etc. – 33 combinations each system.

Hiragana Yōon Examples
きゃ きゅ きょ (kya kyu kyo)
しゃ しゅ しょ (sha shu sho)
ちゃ ちゅ ちょ (cha chu cho)
にゃ にゅ にょ (nya nyu nyo)

ビャ ビュ ビョ (bya byu byo)
ピャ ピュ ピョ (pya pyu pyo)

Common examples: しゃしん (shashin – photograph), ちゃいろ (chairo – brown), りょうり (ryouri – cooking)

The Small っ/ッ (tsu)

Learn how the small tsu creates pauses and emphasized consonants in Japanese words.

How It Works

The small tsu doesn’t represent a sound itself but modifies the following consonant, creating a brief pause or gemination.

がっこう
gakkou
school (pause before ‘k’)
ざっし
zasshi
magazine (pause before ‘sh’)
ロック
rokku
rock music (pause before ‘k’)

Practice Focus
Learning to recognize and pronounce the subtle but important pause that sokuon creates. This small character makes a big difference in pronunciation and meaning.

Katakana includes additional characters used specifically for foreign sounds that don’t naturally exist in Japanese. Essential for reading modern Japanese with foreign loanwords.

Extended Foreign Sound Support

These combinations help Japanese speakers approximate foreign sounds more accurately.

F-Sounds
ファ フィ フェ フォ
(fa fi fe fo)
ファミリー (family)
W-Sounds
ウィ ウェ ウォ
(wi we wo)
ウィンドウ (window)
V-Sounds
ヴァ ヴィ ヴ ヴェ ヴォ
(va vi vu ve vo)
ヴァイオリン (violin)
TS-Sounds
ツァ ツィ ツェ ツォ
(tsa tsi tse tso)
ピッツァ (pizza)
