Learning Japanese kana can seem overwhelming at first, especially when you’re faced with three different writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. But here’s the good news – mastering the foundation of Japanese writing doesn’t have to be difficult.

Whether you’re a complete beginner taking your first steps into Japanese or an intermediate learner looking to solidify your kana knowledge, KanaPro provides a systematic, engaging, and scientifically-backed approach to mastering these crucial writing systems.
Why KanaPro Stands Out
Unlike traditional flashcard apps or static learning materials, KanaPro combines multiple learning modalities to ensure you don’t just memorize characters – you truly understand and can use them.
Who Can Benefit from KanaPro
What Are Hiragana and Katakana?
Hiragana (ひらがな) and Katakana (カタカナ) are the two phonetic alphabets used in Japanese. Unlike English letters that can have different sounds depending on the word, each kana character represents exactly one sound, making Japanese surprisingly regular in its pronunciation.
Think of kana as the building blocks of Japanese writing. Just as you need to know the English alphabet before you can read English words, you need to know hiragana and katakana before you can effectively read Japanese.
- Native Japanese words (like あめ – rain, てがみ – letter)
- Grammatical particles (like は, が, を)
- Verb endings and grammatical changes
- Words where kanji might be too complex or formal
- Foreign loanwords (like コンピューター – computer)
- Foreign names (like スミス – Smith, アメリカ – America)
- Onomatopoeia (sound effects like ドキドキ – heartbeat)
- Scientific terms and technical vocabulary
- Emphasis (similar to using italics in English)
The Systematic Structure of Kana
Both hiragana and katakana follow the same systematic organization based on the traditional Japanese syllabary called the gojūon. This system organizes sounds into:
a-row: あ, い, う, え, お
Ka-row: か, き, く, け, こ
Sa-row: さ, し, す, せ, そ
And so on…
a-column: あ, か, さ, た, な, は, ま, や, ら, わ
i-column: い, き, し, ち, に, ひ, み, り
And so on…
This systematic organization makes learning much more logical and predictable than it might initially appear.
Complete Kana Reference Tables
KanaPro includes comprehensive reference tables for both hiragana and katakana, organised by type and complexity. Understanding these categories will help you approach your learning in a systematic manner.

The Small っ/ッ (tsu)
Learn how the small tsu creates pauses and emphasized consonants in Japanese words.
How It Works
The small tsu doesn’t represent a sound itself but modifies the following consonant, creating a brief pause or gemination.
gakkou
school (pause before ‘k’)
zasshi
magazine (pause before ‘sh’)
rokku
rock music (pause before ‘k’)
Practice Focus
Learning to recognize and pronounce the subtle but important pause that sokuon creates. This small character makes a big difference in pronunciation and meaning.
Special Katakana Characters
Katakana includes additional characters used specifically for foreign sounds that don’t naturally exist in Japanese. Essential for reading modern Japanese with foreign loanwords.
Extended Foreign Sound Support
These combinations help Japanese speakers approximate foreign sounds more accurately.
ファ フィ フェ フォ

ファミリー (family)
ウィ ウェ ウォ

ウィンドウ (window)
ヴァ ヴィ ヴ ヴェ ヴォ
